Santam is one of the popular short term insurers in South Africa. Founded in 1918, Santam boasts a history of over 100 years in car and household insurance. The name Santam stands for The South African National Trust and Assurance Company Limited.

Most South Africans can identify Santam by its yellow umbrella logo but this logo only emerged in 1981, over 60 years after Santam began operating. A common question is whether Santam is related to long term insurer, Sanlam, given the similarity of their names. In fact Sanlam was established as a subsidiary of Santam a month after Santam was founded. While Santam focussed on short term insurance, Sanlam’s specific focus was on life assurance.

A 100 years later and amidst a flurry of newcomers, Santam continues to dominate the short term insurance market. Their dominance is not only in the commercial market but Santam has repeatedly won awards as both a commercial and corporate short-term insurer. In the past 10 years, Santam has won these awards several times and in 2016, Santam was certified as one of the Top Employers in South Africa.

Apart from their commitment to their clients and employees, Santam has equally shown its commitment to the local and international community. From launching the Child Art Program in 1963 and being the first South African insurer to join ClimateWise in 2009 to donating R1 million for the Cape Town floods and fires in 2017, Santam has one of the longest running corporate social investment (CSI) programs in South Africa.

Santam has been revolutionary in the South African short term insurance market. They were the first short-term insurer to offer a single insurance policy that covers multiple assets.
